Write an essay that introduces a general audience to some aspect of your academic discipline

ENG 300
Paper One: Essay on Your Academic Discipline
Write an essay that introduces a general audience to some aspect of your academic discipline (i.e., your major or minor). Do not try to explain everything about your field, which is beyond the scope of a short paper and will lead to a compilation of generalizations. Within any field, scholars are pursuing many different lines of inquiry, so you will want to narrow your focus to a sub-category of your field. For instance, a psychology major could narrow their focus to what research is being conducted about happiness or learning. A history major may focus on US Civil War history. Choose something interesting to you and show your readers why it’s interesting. While much of your essay will be descriptive, the best way to interest readers is to make a point about your topic, rather than just describing it.
To write this paper, you will need to look at many sources, including articles in recent scholarly journals in your discipline. You will want to provide specific examples of the types of questions scholars are trying to answer and how they are going about answering those questions (i.e., their methods).
You must cite at least five sources; at least one must be an article from a peer-reviewed scholarly journal.
Note that this paper is not about the major at WKU or what courses are required. You are introducing a scholarly field of inquiry.
Document your sources (any articles you summarize, paraphrase, or quote) in a documentation style appropriate to your discipline, such as Chicago, APA, or MLA. Note the documentation style you use on the first page of your paper, under your name.
Length: 1000-1250 words. Please double space your paper.
Schedule
Thursday, January 26 Sample draft workshop for paper on major discipline.
Tuesday, January 31 Peer-review workshop 1 for paper on major discipline. Bring a draft that is at least 2-1/2 double-spaced pages. (Your draft may be on paper or on a laptop or tablet, but not a phone.)
Thursday, February 2 Peer-review workshop 2 for paper on major discipline. Bring a revised and complete draft.
Tuesday, February 7 Paper on major discipline due—turn in on Blackboard before the beginning of class.

Why was the Red Army’s success in ice hockey deemed so important to the Soviet Union?

This week we covered sport in Eastern Europe and Western Europe. To explore further
understand the importance of sport from a cultural, nationalistic, and unifying standpoint, you are
to watch the film Red Army (Polsky, 2014).
Answer the following questions:
Part 1 – answer both questions:
1. What are your general thoughts about the movie?
2. How does the movie connect to this week’s module or the emerging themes of this course?
Part 2 – Answer one of the following questions:
1. What personal burdens and hardships did the players have to bear in order to play for the Red
Army?
2. Why was the Red Army’s success in ice hockey deemed so important to the Soviet Union?
3. Why did the Russian government begin allowing its elite hockey players to play in the West
(e.g., the United States of America)?
4. After the fall of communism, Slava Fetisov lamented that Russia had “kind of forget about
the patriotism. Kind of shame, what we was before….we lost something, we lost our pride.
We lost our soul.” What do you believe he was referring to in this quote?
5. Having watched the film, what (if anything) can the US learn and adopt into its approach to
sport used in Eastern Europe in the 1960s to 1980s?
