Your responses will take the form of an
essay, 3-5 pages each (Double spacing, normal font). The responses should

between functionalist and conflict Delineate the central assumptions of each and
articulate how each addresses order and change in society. Finally, briefly articulate a
sociological theory concerning (your self-identified area of interest)

Is the existence of inequality in our society inevitable?

Include your last name in the subject title and separate your answer into paragraphs with spaces between them. Be sure to cite page numbers for sources (direct quotes are also helpful). Remember to read your classmates’ posts and respond to two of them. In addition, you may answer follow-up discussion questions. Be sure to use multiple paragraphs for each answer and cite sources with page numbers.
Your discussion posts are due the following Monday by 11:59p.m.
Questions:
(1) Is the existence of inequality in our society inevitable? Use this question to become familiar with the subject of inequality.
(2) Discuss the specific ways in which the class structure of society is shaped by the political, cultural, and economic context in which it is embedded. How does wealth and income distribution impact our social structure? You can use these questions to discuss some events that are unfolding in our current political climate

What advantages and disadvantages do you see to the way sociological theory has been conducted?

Here are the initial discussion questions:
(1) Why does Seidman worry about the way that sociologists have been developing
and communicating their theories of social life? What does he see as the main
problems with the way many sociological theorists conduct their work? Do you share
his concerns? What advantages and disadvantages do you see to the way sociological
theory has been conducted?
(2) Give an example of at least one social theory that you use in everyday life. We
all have theories about how things work in our social lives, so you do not have to know
anything about individual sociological theorists. Tell us what elements of your social
life come into play and how they relate to one another. How do you use this theory in
your day-to-day life?
(3) Given what you know so far, do you think it is possible to construct any social
theory, large or small, as simple, and consistently accurate in its predictions as
Einstein’s theory of the relationship between energy and matter? If you think not, tell
us why not. If you think so, give us your reasons. Before you make up your mind,
consider that many people are trying to build theories of human behavior. They want
to do things like predict what will lead someone to buy a product, or predict whether
a convicted felon will recidivate, or predict whether two people are compatible
marital partners…and so on. Are these folks wasting their time?

The goal of this assignment is to explain how specific sociological elements are present in an in-depth manner as it pertains to deviance. This is not a film summary nor a film review.
For the film you have chosen, students will analyze the content for sociological perspectives as it pertains to deviance in an in-depth manner. This paper should follow standard 5 paragraph essay format. Your introduction must briefly summarize the film and include a detailed thesis. The thesis statement must clearly identify how that particular film shows evidence of the specific concepts found in the film. An example would be:
“The 1988 film “Stand and Deliver” represents a clear analysis of achieved status, as well as ethnic and economic stigma through the conflict perspective”
For the body paragraphs, you should select 3-4 terms from the chapter on deviance that you will be able to identify from the film as examples in your analysis. You should include a definition of the term prior to giving examples of that term. Also, make a reference to how your examples (from the film) are reflections of that term. Each paragraph should be dedicated to evaluating a specific term.
A conclusion paragraph should wrap up your ideas and reinforce your thesis. Points to remember: Incorporate at least 3 concepts pertaining to deviance. Clearly identify and explain at least one major theoretical perspective when analyzing the film. Show clear comprehension of one or more of the key concepts.
Respond to their ideas regarding their film, especially if you have seen the film.

Read: Transition to Parenthood (pdf attached to my first comment below)

Prompt: In the social sciences, the “transition to parenthood” begins when a couple becomes pregnant for the first time and lasts until the child is about two. What are the relationship challenges that are encountered during the transition to parenthood? How do men and women perceive the transition to parenthood differently, and how does it affect their relationship satisfaction? We are told that wanting and having children is “normal” or even “expected” in most cultures, but what about couples who do not want to have children–what is their relationship and life satisfaction like?
[Note: Of course, non-coupled or single individuals can have children or not have children as well–nothing wrong with that–but this particular question is about the transition to parenthood within a relationship.]
