Project Options and What You Need To Know About How This Class Is Managed

In this class, you are respected and treated as an entrepreneur!

Entrepreneurs are not told how to do work in the real world. We are not given rubrics for projects, we are not told how many sentences it takes to answer questions, we are not guided on what format they should use AND we are certainly not told how many words should be included for an A!

We decide for ourselves how and when work is to be done. It is a HUGE advantage of being an entrepreneur.

I will be encouraging YOU to make MANY decisions. YOU choose the format and length of your projects; YOU decide when to take tests and when to submit projects.

Think about it. Does it really matter if you choose to document the entrepreneur’s responses in a paragraph or question-answer format? No, who cares, I don’t! In the “real world” and the world of the entrepreneur, what matters is the end result of your work.

Would you rather do something else as a project? GREAT! I am open to whatever will help you in your work or career. Send me a proposal on something that you would like to do as an alternative to the projects. Think outside the box and BE ENTREPRENUERIAL!

Because this is an academic environment:
The more thorough the work, the higher your grade… Short answers and a rehash of what the book says will not get you an A. I am MOST INTERESTED in your opinions and your interpretation of what you may find in the book. Fair Warning: If you choose one of the “interview an entrepreneur” projects and simply write down her/his responses to the questions, you will not do well on it. There is nothing entrepreneurial about that!

Make sure you do not miss the scheduled deadlines. Be creative, take advantage of what you do well and be thorough and detailed in your work.

Several ways to complete projects are offered this semester. Project selections are
completely up to you.

Once the assignment for week 2 has been submitted, i will upload it here
You have most likely taken time to understand and build a brand focus for your venture but what about your leadership style? How would you “sell” yourself as an entrepreneurial leader? This week, you are developing your leadership brand.
Review your leadership assessment results from Week 2 and the traits and behaviors discussed this week to select three to four areas that represent you as a leader. Take those areas and create a PowerPoint presentation of 3-4 slides (excluding title and reference slides) and “sell” who you are as a leader. You want to expand on the areas to show how each represents you.
Note: Be creative! Do you not just list your previous job positions on PowerPoint slides and move on. You want to sell who you are as a leader.
Hint: Get your family and friends involved. Look for images, quotes, clips, etc. that represent who you are as an entrepreneurial leader.
Have fun with this assignment, you never know, it may be a presentation you add to the website of your venture.

If your idea is not significantly different from competitors suggest how you might change the idea to make it different or how you might change the focus of the idea such as targeting the needs of a different set of customers that are currently not be served by your competitors.

To generate your three product ideas, think about your life experiences or other businesses that you have observed. You may also draw from any ideas you identified in the first assignment that asked you to come up with an idea that synthesized a passion, skill, and frustration.
To further help you generate three new ideas consider these sources.
Trends in our environment (economic, technical, political, social, demographic, etc.) trends often reflect societal needs and problems that people are looking to satisfy and solve. Can you think of any trends that may reflect a business opportunity? A few current trends with business opportunities include: a focus on health and wellness, the aging population, wearable technology, alternative energy sources, the sharing economy (e.g., Airbnb), drones, affordable health care, small house movement, robots, smart homes (e.g., internet of things), etc.
Unsolved customer problems or need.
Consider what frustrates, annoys, or angers you? Is there a product or service that could eliminate these frustrations? If not, then conceive of a way to solve the problem. What products or services do you wish existed but do not currently?
Ask people you know (e.g., family, friends, co-workers, etc.) what frustrates or annoys them. Then consider how to address their pain or problem.
Are there products or services that you use that you are dissatisfied with? How might you improve the product or service? Interview people you know about the product or service that bug them.
Gaps in the marketplace.
Are you aware of a group of people that have unique needs or problems that are not currently being met? (e.g., entrepreneurs in Wichita, WSU students, young professionals in Wichita, small business owners, etc.)
What to include in your idea post:
For each of your three idea posts, please not only describe the idea but also address who the customer will be and what problem or need your product/service solves or satisfies for the customer. Specifically, for full points please include the following in your posts.
1. Describe the idea – what it is or what does it do?
2. Describe in general who you think the ideal customer will be for your product/service?
3. Describe why you think the idea represents an opportunity, that is, what problem or need does your product/service solve or satisfy for your customer (e.g., what is the value proposition)?
4. Do an initial internet search on your idea to discover what other companies have similar products or services and report on your findings. Address how your idea is different from competitors’ products and services. If your idea is not significantly different from competitors suggest how you might change the idea to make it different or how you might change the focus of the idea such as targeting the needs of a different set of customers that are currently not be served by your competitors.

Homework #1
Description of Your Company
1. Company Overview: Who are you? Why are you starting this business? What does the business do? What makes this business unique? Who are your customers? Where are you located? This section is a general overview of your business idea.
2. Mission: A mission answers the question of why you exist. It is the purpose of your business. The mission answers the questions: what you do, for whom, how, and with what results. Your mission should be motivational, memorable and meaningful. In addition, it should be short – a sentence or two at the most.
3. Vision: The vision is your window to the future. A vision pulls you to the future and is the possibilities and dreams of your hope for your company. It is a clear statement or multiple statements of what you want your business to achieve in 5, 10 or 25 years. A vision provides clarity and understanding.
4. Goals & Objectives: Goal statements become how you are going to achieve your mission and vision of the future. They are written with specificity as to what you will achieve. Clearly state the goals you will need to achieve within the first year of your business and then write specific objectives for each goal. Objectives and the smaller task you will need to complete to reach your goals.
5. Organization: This is a description of the type organization your company will be. Will you be a sole proprietor, a partnership, a corporation, or a franchise? Why?
6. Number of employees: This portion identifies what you will need to carry out your business idea. Can it be achieved with just one individual; do you need employees, or subcontractors? This needs thoughtful consideration. Some businesses, such as production organizations, need several people to get started. Others, such as consulting firms can operate with one person and subcontractors. Identify all the employees you will need within the first year and then a short plan of what you may need down the road.
7. Management Team/ Structure: Briefly describe the management structure of your company. Include an organizational chart. Do you want a president, chief financial officer, vice president, and sales manager? Begin to identify the roles in your organization. You may start by identifying a few roles and make a statement about future roles that will be required. Include a short bio for each owner.
8. Industry Overview: What is currently happening in your industry? Do research to identify the trends happening now and try to figure out what may be coming in the industry. Be specific. Research the industry to find out what is happening right now. Use data to support your thoughts.

Remember to include a question of your own in your thread.

For each week’s Discussion Forum, write a response to the provided question on the first thread as well as your own question on the week’s reading in a new thread by Thursday evening. Then, post two (2) comments to your classmate’s threads by Sunday night of that week. Your response to the initial discussion question must be between 100-150 words (not including the required quotations from the text) and at least 50 words for your own question. Your 2 replies must be at least 100 words each (not including the required quotations or citations from the text).
Topic: Heroes and Villains in Paradise Lost
Paradise Lost is a complex poem that has generated greatly varying interpretations and responses. Since it is an epic poem, we expect it to have a hero. Based on this week’s reading (Books 1-6, but focusing especially on Books 1, 3, and 4), who do you think is the hero of the poem? Common answers include Satan, God, the Son (he’s not called Jesus in this poem until PL 10.183), and Adam & Eve. For the character you choose, what is one heroic quality he or she possesses? To support your answer, quote or refer to at least one passage from the reading and cite book and line numbers. Remember to include a question of your own in your thread.
