The Birmingham Jail Letter  By Martin Luther King jr
Please respond to the prompt of your choice in essay form. Short essay form includes an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs (three, at least), and a brief conclusion. Direct quotation from the letter should be utilized within the essay. Please make this your original work, as opposed to what has been written and published already online. I will use TURNITIN to check for originality.
Please use MLA format (found in D2L). That means everything should be double spaced, biographical information on the first page top left, page numbers with your last name beside it on the top of each page. Please include in text citations and works cited with this work for anything you borrow.
Select one:
Aristotle said that the most successful persuasive communicators had mastery of the three classical appeals of logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos is an appeal to reason. Pathos is an appeal to emotion. Discuss how King uses logos and pathos to his advantage in “Letter From Birmingham Jail.” Use clear examples of each, and explain what you think King intended to accomplish by using these appeals.
Ethos is an appeal that centers around the writer or speaker establishing her or his own credibility with his/her audience. Aristotle believed that the writer must come across as a trustworthy and fair minded source of information if the audience was to find him compelling. Many scholars have said that King does a particularly good job of establishing his credibility as a communicator in this Letter. If you agree, write an essay describing how King successfully builds his credibility.
As discussed in our textbook, a solid argument is usually built around the writer’s use of good evidence, and our book categorizes different types of evidence on pages 327-335. In an essay, describe the type(s) of evidence King uses in his letter, and explain very clearly why you feel that the evidence is effective. Keep in mind the first two elements of the rhetorical situation: purpose and audience.
As we have discussed in class, acknowledging and possibly refuting the viewpoints of one’s opposition may prove to be crucial to winning an argument. King is directly addressing an audience of people who are critical of his work. Does King address points made against him? Which, specifically, and how does he refute the opposition? Would such counterarguments help an objective observer side with King? Discuss how the writer deals with acknowledging and refuting the other side in “Letter From Birmingham Jail.”
Figurative language is a staple of narrative and memoir writing, which relies on descriptiveness. King is very adept at using figures of speech and imagery within this letter. Write a short essay discussing how King utilizes imagery and figurative language, and how, specifically, in reiterates his purpose as writer.

Overview
Your assignment for this module is to write a narrative essay. You may base this story on an experience you have had or create a completely fictional story; regardless, make sure your narrative centers on a compelling conflict that propels the action forward. Use description to effectively flesh out the characters that appear in the story and to make the settings in which it takes place come alive. Use chronological order to present your experience in a logical manner; you may also use flashbacks (or perhaps even flash forwards) to jump around in time, but make sure the reader can easily follow the action of the story. Use transitions to effectively tie events together and connect your ideas. Your final paper should be 2–4 typed, double spaced pages (approximately 500 to 1000 words).
One day I decided to tap into my fear of heights. Made my reservation, to go skydiving. Woke up like normal the day of got dressed and headed out. Did my normal morning routine got my Starbucks coffee and a snack.  I showed early so i sat in my car for 15minutes and finished my Starbucks. Now I’m all checked in. the Diver gave me a long list of dos and don’ts now I’m scared what if I don’t activate my parachute on time. Anxiety at an all-time high I still fallowed through.  we are on the plane now the diver is giving me the little prep talk before the jump. “On the count of 3 we jump”. “1,2,3”, I was still standi g there so the other diver pushed me. Oh no, I forgot how to activate my parachute. now I’m panicking I passed out mid-air then my phone started ringing it was just a dream.

Should White Fang by Jack London be in the literary canon.  White Fang is about a half wolf attacking men from a town in the snow while they are traveling with a dog sled team. The men are hunted by wolves in the forest and attacked many times. The half wolf eventually has a cub and there are many descriptions of the cub growing up and learning about the world. The wolf and cub are soon found by an Indian tribe and the audience learns that the wolf had belonged to an Indian in their camp and had the name Kiche. The cub is given the name White Fang and they learn how to live among people. He becomes in need of money so their tribe leader tries his best to go to the town and make some, though in that process he has to give away Kiche, and soon White Fang as well to a greedy old man who stole the money he made. The man breaks White Fang with the cane he trains him to fear and obey. Eventually White Fang is busted out of that horrible life and taken in by a couple that soon domesticates him again, then after White Fang helps them and protects them, they set him free back, so that he can again listen to the call of the wild. I do like the book and think it is interesting but the whole thing of the dog being broken though he finally conquered his fears and protects the people he loves to “answer the call of the wild” literally reminds me too much of, The Call of the Wild. The book is relatable in many senses though it is a very long and at times a boring read.

Chapter Six: Addiction Across the Life Span
This week we are discussing addiction across the lifespan. Please watch this TedTalk by addiction expert, Dr Gabor Mate:  The Power of Addiction and The Addiction of Power: Gabor Maté at TEDxRio+20

Then compose a top-level post in ESSAY format that responds to these questions:
1. How does Mate define addiction and what does he mean when he says “we need to look at what’s right about addiction”? (i.e. what do people get out of their addictions?)
2. How does he relate his own shopping addiction to other addictions (i.e., problems that resulted in his life)
3. How does the human brain and its interaction with the environment impact addiction?
4. In his experience, how does early trauma and abuse impact addiction and what does he say about intergenerational trauma and its impact on addiction?
5. What are your thoughts on this TedTalk and the perspective taken by Gabor Mate on addiction?
Use the e-text as well which I’ll attach in the files to answer these questions. Reference the page number and the author in the citation. I’ve attached the cover of the book as well so you know where you are referencing from.
