Compare/contrast “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber. This is not a general comparison, but follows the outline below focusing on the use of other worlds in both pieces. Both stories are attached. Will tip generously due to reading required.
Choose two of the “other worlds” described in the unit. Compare and contrast the ways these other worlds impacted the real world for the characters.
–Respond to the writing prompt in three separate, complete paragraphs. Begin your response by including an introductory sentence stating the title and author in the selection.

–Paragraph 1: (R and A and C) Restate the Question and Answer the question. Story #1- State the story title and author’s name. State the next story title and author’s name. Explain how both short stories have the main character traveling to different “worlds”. Consider how both authors described a world far removed from the character, often based in the near or distant future. Include a quote that best shows the impact the setting has on the characters.
–Paragraph 2: (A and C) Summarize Story #1 in a sentence or two and identify the “other world” and what it implies for the characters. Include a quote from the text that shows the impact the setting has on the character. Using a transition word/words, summarize story- #2 in a sentence or two and identify the “other world” and what it implies for the characters. Include a quote from the text that explains the impact the setting has on the character.
–Paragraph 3: (E) Compare and Contrast the other world in both short stories. Explain how the setting impacted the characters. Did the other worlds impact the main characters in the same way or different? What happened to both of the main characters? How are these stories the same? How are they different? Think through multiple perspectives, share your personal views and understanding and make new connections based off of the quotes you chose.
